HVRAS Has Changed – But Getting Your Heavy Vehicle Registered Is Still Easy

If you're trying to register a heavy vehicle in Queensland, you've probably heard that the Heavy Vehicle Registration Assessment Scheme (HVRAS) has ended.

Don't worry—it doesn't mean heavy vehicle inspections have stopped. It simply means the process has changed.

What is a heavy vehicle pre-registration inspection?

If you have a vehicle that isn't currently registered in Queensland and you want to register it, Transport and Main Roads (TMR) may require a pre-registration inspection.

This inspection confirms important details about your vehicle, including its dimensions, identification details and specifications before it can be registered.

Who needs one?

You may need a heavy vehicle pre-registration inspection if you're registering a vehicle in Queensland that is not currently registered, including:

• Trucks over 4.5 tonnes GVM

• Buses

• Heavy trailers

• Large caravans that require heavy vehicle registration

• Imported heavy vehicles

• New heavy vehicles that have never been registered

• Interstate heavy vehicles being registered in Queensland for the first time

What's changed?

From 1 July 2026, the HVRAS accreditation scheme officially came to an end.

Previously, only accredited HVRAS providers could complete the required inspection paperwork.

Now, anyone can complete the paperwork, including the vehicle owner or their representative.

While that gives customers more flexibility, many people still prefer to have someone experienced complete the inspection and paperwork correctly the first time.

Do I have to complete the paperwork myself?

No.

Although you're now able to complete the paperwork yourself, many customers choose to have us handle it for them.

Measuring a heavy vehicle correctly and completing the required forms can be time-consuming, especially if you've never done it before.
